COMMON SENSE HOME SAFETY IDEAS

One of the most common avoidable home fire ideas would be the unattended lit scented candles in any homes.
Many times these can candles are left in close proximity to flammable materials such as drapes, doilies, carpeting, newspapers and table cloths.

• With pets and small children in the home the unattended candles can topple over and start a fire, endangering the entire family and property.

Next are plug in type scented device which the CPC has previously recalled due to fire hazards.

THINK ABOUT THIS, THERE IS 110 VOLTS OF ELECTRICITY HEATING A PIECE OF PLASTIC WHICH IN TURN HEATS THE SCENTED OIL.

EVEN WORSE ARE THE DEVICES THAT HAVE AN ADDITIONAL PLUG BUILT INTO THE SCENTED DEVICE.

• AGAIN HOME FIRES HAVE BEEN BLAMED ON THESE DEVICES.
  

Electrical hazards may be present and should not be overlooked by anyone. Examples would be switches that don’t operate properly, cracked outlets, paint clogged outlets, light fixtures left open, inoperable or dangling form the ceiling / fixture.

• Be sure hire a qualified electrical contractor to correct all Deficiencies.
  
  Other fire hazards that should not be over looked would be dryers, be sure to clean out the lint trap after every use. Also Replace the plastic dyer vent with a metal one for fire prevention. This type of vent piping is no longer safe.

Be sure to install carbon monoxide detectors for family safety and carbon monoxide poisoning prevention.

Be sure to install smoke detectors for family safety and smoke and fire safety.

Be sure to have fire extinguishers near the kitchen, gas appliances and garages for safety.

Secure all loose railings in the home and outside of the home. If no rails are present on the porches or staircases, be sure to have some installed.

The decks are not to be forgotten. Check all deck rails including the stairs to be sure the rails are secure. The spacing between the spindles should be less than 4 inches for child safety. Any wider spacing an infant or toddler could stick their head in between and choke / strangulation.

DO NOT LEAVE SMALL APPLIANCES PLUGGED IN when not in use, these include coffee makers, hair dryers, toasters and other smll appliances. these all have elements that may overheat or short that have causd home fires.

The level of concentration of radiation gas entering your home will effect the amount of Radon that will be present.

A simple test can determine the safe or unsafe levels of Radon present in the home during the test.

A Qualified Radon Tester certified through the US EPA or NJ DEP can perform a simple and effective test for you.

If you are a homeowner self test kits can be purchased through us or any local home improvement store, BUT if you are purchasing a home, this test must be perform by a qualified Radon tester.

Safe level normal would be between 0 & 4.0 anything higher would normal be cause for concern and you would be at risk for developing lung cancer.
